A History of Meditation

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

There is limited knowledge concerning the history of meditation, but some researchers think that meditation could have been discovered when people sat at campsite fires thousands of years ago and looked at the flames. This theory goes well with the known fact that staring at a candle flame can induce one type of meditation. As time passed different forms of it were developed. Books from India called tantras speak of this type of prayer as far back as five thousand years ago. Archaeologists discovered a statue of a yogi in the Indus Valley Civilization and this shows that meditation in the practice of yoga could be as ancient as the first Indian civilization.

Buddha was a big advocate of meditation. He became established as a teacher about 500 B.C. His ideas were stretched into various Asian countries and in other places people created different forms of meditation based on his teachings. In Islam the Sufi tradition of meditation was purported and the leaders (Sufis) think that when Mohamed began Islam that is when meditation started with that religion. Meditation is part of Christianity, Jainism, Judaism, and aboriginal religions.

Zen Buddhism is a philosophy that advocates meditating to discover the meaning of life. Zen came from Buddhism and it has spawned Taoism, Confucianism, and Indian spiritualism. Taoism basically means the way. It began as a philosophy but ended up as a religion. Taoist meditation concentrates on stopping outward sensory information from coming into your mind. It utilizes breathing techniques. It has ideas that are like those of Hindu and Buddhist kinds of meditative thought. But it isn’t abstract like those types of meditation. The Confucian form of meditation is aimed at realizing virtue and it is meant to prevent disease and encourage health. Indian spiritualism involves yoga and mantras

In Christian meditation the word maranatha is used and it means the lord comes. Maranatha is an Aramaic word and this is the language that Jesus spoke. Ancient monks started this mantra and it is centered on Saint Paul’s writings to the Corinthians and the book of Revelation that Saint John penned.

In Christianity meditation has become known as contemplation. According to James Finley who was a Trappist monk for twenty years Christian meditation or contemplation began with the early Christians. They comprehended that when Jesus said that he and the father were one that they could experience something of this meaning by contemplation.

With the Protestant Reformation meditation or contemplative prayer was rejected along with other practices. But it is still understood as apart of the Christian tradition by the Catholic and Episcopal traditions. Actually, within the evangelical form of Christianity contemplation is a practice, but it isn’t thought of or described as such. Though when deep contemplative prayer is practiced and the practitioner inners into surrendering to the lord or prayer with serious surrender to the Lord, they are experiencing meditation in the Christian sense.

Meditation has a long history and is culturally diverse. It is part of many religious or philosophical traditions and it has become a part of the western secular culture.

Drinking and Marijuana: Where Can They Lead?

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

John from Virginia asked, “What’s the big deal about drinking and smoking some weed.”

Drinking and Marijuana: Where Can they Lead?

“I had a bad day and just want to relax… I just want to fit in… No one loves me… I’m ugly and don’t want to feel anymore… I don’t care whether I live or die…” There are many reasons people turn to alcohol and drugs.

Most people start out drinking or doing drugs occasionally; they don’t set out to get addicted. No one really knows who will become addicted and why? Genetic make-up, psychological and environmental factors, some develop an addiction immediately and others it takes time.

Most people don’t realize that alcohol is a drug. In fact, it is a depressant and the most commonly used drug in the entire world. At first, it initiates a ’happy’ feeling and relieves anxiety. Then it causes blurred vision, slurred speech, loss in motor function and at higher levels — poisoning and death.

According to studies, individuals who drink before the age of 17 are three times more likely to develop an addiction than those who starts drinking at the legal age of 21. If we examine the addiction rates of pre-teen drinkers, the numbers increase dramatically.

Marijuana, pot, weed, blunts, joints, one-hitters — this drug contains THC and is dangerous to the body because it acts like a stimulant and depressant, increasing the heart rate, lowering body temperature, interfering with muscle function and reaction time.

Don’t let the hype that marijuana is not a big deal fool you. Pot smokers have a higher rate of drop-out rates in school, depression and schizophrenia. More young people are in treatment facilities for marijuana dependency than all other illegal drugs combined.

Since both are depressants, the combination of alcohol and marijuana doubles the affects on the body. More importantly, Marijuana suppresses nausea, and one of the body’s primary mechanisms for alcohol poisoning is vomiting. With the presence of these two drugs, the stomach may not release the excess before it enters the blood stream.

When Alcohol and Marijuana are frequently used, you are likely to…

* Put yourself in dangerous situations and unhealthy relationships.

* Be sexually promiscuous and irresponsible.

* Develop an increased tolerance and need more frequent and larger dosages.

* Do other drugs — cocaine, prescription drugs, crystal meth, crack, heroin…

* Get arrested — perhaps serve jail time.

* Develop serious health problems — digestive, heart, lungs, neurological…

If addiction develops, the age a person starts drinking or doing drugs is where they stop maturing mentally.

“Well, that explains everything,” the unknown drunk laughed. “I started drinking and smoking before I started middle school.”

Drugs affect your body, brain, judgment — your self-control. Using them can harm or kill you and others around you. With those with an addictive personality, like the Unknown Drunk, one drink can quickly lead to two then four, ten, amphetamines, mescaline and cocaine.

“I should be dead,” the Unknown Drunk continued. “My brain’s mush, immune system’s shot… It makes me sick that I could have really hurt someone… I’m sorry, Susan… what was the question?”

Susan DeAngelis is a teacher, author and considered an expert in the field of addiction and other important family issues.
She has teamed up with The Unknown Drunk to promote awareness to these pressing issues.

Teachings of Zen Masters

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

The teacher plays a vital role in Zen practice, where direct communication is more important than scriptural study. The teacher-disciple relationship is amazing in Zen tradition. The teacher renders all the essential services that make the disciple to live fully. He helps to understand the life of oneness. And he explains to the disciple how each birth is a joyous event and filled with a sense of wonder.

The teacher teaches the Dharma, that means the doctrines and teachings of Lord Buddha. According to Zen beliefs, only a noble disciple can realize the Dharma perfectly. The disciple needs to have enlightened mind to get the ultimate wisdom.

AZen teacher guides the students in meditation, which is the core of Zen practice. He directs the students to perform the rituals flawlessly.

The important role of Zen teacher is to make the student understands the idea of Dharma transmission; this refers to the way in which the teaching is passed from the teacher to the student. The dharma transmission involves awakening the disciple to the true nature. Then the student begins to grow a mystical realization of identity and how to attain Buddhahood.

The teacher gets honorable titles. In Chinese, the title is Fashi, Sunim in Korean, Osho in Japanese and Thay in Vietnamese. He guides the student by providing step-by-step approach.

In Zen, lineage is a system where the teacher certifies the student to teach others. The student then becomes a teacher. It is common for daily chanting in Zen temples to include the lineage. However, modern Zen Buddhists raise criticisms against lineage system.

The Zen teacher teaches the law of karma, which is so powerful and governs the world. He helps the student to take the path of Zen. The disciple can get new perspectives and insights, which ultimately lead to enlightenment.

While the written word regarding Zen practice is often misunderstood by common people, a teacher can clearly specify the meanings and concepts. This emphasizes the importance of Guru in Zen practice where the instructor awakens the thoughts of Buddha in his disciple through meditation.

The techniques and practices require understanding of many suttas and sutras of Buddhist principles. The sutras refer to canonical scriptures, which are the records of the oral teachings of Lord Buddha. Sutta is exclusively used to refer Buddhist scriptures in Pali form.

The role of the teacher is somewhat different in China. He needs to give training in virtue and discipline. The training in wisdom is also essential. It is highly important for a student to find a real teacher who can teach Zen; there are many Zen monasteries all over the world and the students can find a teacher there.

The role of teacher here is vitally important since he alone can enlighten the students in right way. He gives some guidance in Zazen practice, which is a type of Zen sitting meditation. He says some words to create an environment in which the student can be awakened. He can even guide in treating makyo, physical pain, and sleepiness and so on.

Here’s an excellent way to start enjoying the benefits of meditation today. The Deep Zen audio program is easy for anyone wanting to learn how to meditate and helps advanced meditators achieve deeper levels of meditation too. Try your free demo here: http://holothink.org

What Are the Causes of Stress?

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Whatever problem we do have in our life, it is better to know it well. If we try to ignore some problem in our life, the problem will not disappear. It will still be there. Therefore, if we learn about the root cause of every problem, we will be in better position against that problem.

The same logic applies to the stress. Everybody is in situation of stress at some point. Some of us more often, some less, but still, everybody face the stress eventually.

What causes stress? There are many different reasons of causing stress. In general, stress causes are grouped in several areas.

- Work and the workplace problems is the biggest contributor to our stress. This is almost to be expected, since we spend one third of a day at work. Our job demands a certain performance and result from us, with limitation of resources. We are expected to compress maximum outputs within minimal resources. Normally, this demand is making stretching effect on us, which causes stress.

The problem with work stress becomes even bigger at the point when the work starts to penetrate in our life. This happens when we continue to receive business calls although we are at home. Bringing our work at home is cause of stress, since instead of relaxing we are still engaged with work.

Although some people are not working, that does not means that they are stress free. Demand of school or study can also be a cause of stress.

- Money is necessary in or life, since nothing is for free. But here are two problems. First problem lays in the fact that our income is always limited, while our imagination of spending money is literally unlimited. The second problem is that more we earn the more we spend, but when we start to earn less, the spending habits stays. Indeed, it is difficult to cope with all temptation from marketing messages that we recieve.

- Family is frequent cause of stress. Having a family is the obligation that can occupy us beyond our capacity, which is causing stress. Things get worse when family problem is multiplied with money or work problem. You can be under a stress due to the influence of some family member to you. But even if family members do not influence you directly, you are still influenced. If some family member has some major problem, you have it too, until a certain extent.

- Social factors can cause stress. Sometimes, if our pride is hurt we feel stressed. Nobody likes to be ashamed of something. Fighting competition can cause stress. If you envy somebody, you cannot stay calm. Traffic jam or cue can stress you. If you are being discriminated you can feel stressed.

Actually, there are many ways to be stressed. There are many things that cause stress. It would be difficult to avoid all stress situations. But if we learn and understand what causes stress in our life, if we become aware and able to anticipate stress, we will be in better position to face stress. Understanding and knowing the causes of stress can give us ability to anticipate stress. Once we know cause of stress and we get the ability to anticipate stress, we will be prepared to cope with stress and to recover after the stress period.

Why Ghosts Make Noise…It’s Not for the Reasons You Might Think

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Ghosts do some pretty bizarre things to get our attention. As someone who has interacted with ghosts since I was a child, I’ve seen and heard some pretty amazing things.

And they continue to happen…

Like the other night when I woke up to the sound of pacing in my hallway. There were two different sets of footsteps that night. One had a heavier step and a different pace from the other set.

They seemed to be worried about something and they paced for hours.

After a while I was able to block out the noise and I went back to sleep.

I realize that sounds like an unusual response, but unexplained noises happen so often in my life I just flow with it most of the time.

Too, ghosts are really very egocentric. To them the only problems that exist are theirs.

They crave attention. Which is why they make the noises they do.

They go through their days and nights mostly being around people who can’t see or hear them. So they do what they can to get noticed. Being noticed often becomes a life purpose for many ghosts since they feed off of that attention.

I received an email recently from a reader who is regularly visited by spirits and we began discussing the creative ways in which ghosts and other spirits work to get our attention. Flashing lights, computer and other electrical disturbances are definite favorites.

That night I woke up at 3 a.m. and went into the bathroom, accidentally dropping something and making a loud noise. “Shhhh..” a bodiless voice said from inside the bathroom.

It startled me but I knew she was just enjoying my attention.

She left quickly, so, off I went back to bed. I knew she’d be back.

The next day I was downstairs with the kids when suddenly the upstairs toilet flushed. Since no one was upstairs at the time, we all thought this was a little suspicious.

About 15 minutes later it happened again. So, we all went upstairs for a while, and there was no flushing.

Back we went downstairs, and again, more flushing!

I left the house for a little while and when I came back my husband said the pattern had continued. As long as someone was upstairs the toilet was quiet. But whenever we all went downstairs, the flushing continued.

Later that night I went up to my bathroom and found the ghostly gal who was working so hard to get our attention. Her name was Sandy and she told me she was lonely and bored. She felt angry and resentful over hard times and betrayals from her life as well as a tragic death.

Her energy was a little threatening and distrusting. So, rather than running the risk of losing her again, I quickly turned the conversation to going home. She was ready and with my help, went to the Other Side easily.

Usually people think that ghosts haunt or make noise to scare or intimidate. Sometimes that’s the case, but more often than not they make noise to get attention.

Ghosts are stuck and unhappy and they make noise for attention and to try to get help.

How to Find Happiness

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

With the Christmas season recently past, most of us are left with a hollow feeling where the warm glow of the season used to be. Why? Because the temporary bliss that Christmas provides isn’t the answer to how to find happiness. Using Christmas to find happiness when you don’t have it is like putting a band-aid on a gushing artery-it might work for a moment, but it’s not a long term solution. Real happiness can’t be wrapped up with a bow, and the more quickly you realize that the sooner you will be on the path to discovering true happiness.

If you want to know how to find happiness you have to push past the lies propagated by the media for the consumer market. Everywhere we turn we see advertisers pushing products that they promise will make us happy, from the hippest line of clothing to the latest antidepressants. They’re all band-aids, but because we’ve heard these same advertisers telling us our whole lives that there has to be a quick, easy solution to our unhappiness we keep buying things in an effort to fill an ever widening hole.

The same rule applies to climbing the corporate ladder. We’re taught that successful people are happy, confident and living the life of their dreams, and so we struggle to follow in their footsteps only to discover that we’re just as hollow when we reach that elusive C-suite as we were when we started.

Your career, your possessions, even your family aren’t the answer to how to find happiness. In order to find true happiness, you have to look a little further up.

True happiness comes from peace of the spirit. Unhappiness is caused by the belief that our lives are somehow lacking, that we haven’t managed to fulfill our ideal of ourselves and what we should be and therefore we need to find something more to bridge the gap. True happiness, however, comes with the belief that we have exactly what we need, our lives are exactly what they should be and there’s nothing more we could possibly do to make it any better.

If you want to know how to find happiness you must first discover how to find that peace of the spirit, and the only way to obtain that kind of peace is through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. When you enter into a relationship with Christ not only will you find a peace within yourself, but you’ll discover the true reason you were so unhappy to begin with. As a person, we were never meant for this earth. We’re out of our element in a world filled with hatred and greed, never truly belonging and therefore never able to find true happiness.

When you develop that personal relationship with Christ you’ll know how to find happiness, because you’ll be lifted free of your burdens and your sense of not belonging. In the Bible, Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth and the light.” (John 14:6) He is the way to find true happiness. He is the truth in a society filled with lies about the true meaning of life, and he is the light to the dark recesses of your soul that are making you unhappy. Once you learn to let go and let God you’ll discover that there’s a beautiful world waiting out there that you never knew existed.

How to Be Popular: Psychologist’s Advice

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

1. Why do you want to become popular? - is it because you just want to get into a group? Do you want to impress people and be a member of a certain class or do you intend to make more friends so that you can enjoy? Do you want to impress, attract and seduce the opposite sex with ease? You can become popular through various means and you may need to do a lot, but first you have to evaluate if all those things you need to do are really worth for attaining popularity.

2. Be at ease with what you are and have a confident body language: others will notice you if you are confident and will come to you. Once you are at ease with being lonely and satisfied with what you are, you will be able to make friends easily.

3. Carve out your own image: many are of the opinion that wearing different clothes and having a different hairstyle are enough to make you popular. On the contrary, frequent changes in your style make you look as if you are toiling at it. Hence presnet yourself in a fashion that all can see the best in you. For example, a short hair cut might help you highlight your eyes or lips or smile or a jeans you wear will show the level of confidence you posses. Change is a good way to present yourself. But find out the fashion which is not of out date and which would suit your personality too. The most confident people are those who don’t hesitate to try out new things.

4. Be proud of how you look and strive to be fit: Be clean if you want to attract people. Shower, brush and use perfumes and deodorants. Do not make people uncomfortable when they are with you. Odor is one thing people don’t like. Also to appear fresh wash your face as often as possible. Also, you can reduce the sprouting up of acne every now and then. Girls may use a moderate amount of make up.

5. Be passionate: get involoved in some events like athletics, community service or some other avocation. When you become a member of a group you develop bonding with your team-mates. This bonding can inspire and instill confidence in you. Don’t worry about people. Just get involved in what you think you can contribute your best in. eventually people will recognize you talent and you will get the due credit. You need not be a popular football player or cheerleader to become popular. There are many other ways to become popluar.

6. Never hesitate: Don’t hide your talents. Show all facets and particularly those which people around you are not aware of. This will make you popular and people will be interested in forging relationship with you. If you show this talent to a large number of people, you can spread your name faster. But do not be boastful. Humility is the key here.

7. Be aggressive and social: Friends will not come to you, particularly if you are known to be a person who is shy and not the social kind of. Even if you do not like being in the company of people, you have to break out of that belief and try to be social. Do not hesitate any chance to talk to a person – be it a queue you are standing or the person sitting next to you in a hall.

The quickest and the most reliable way to develop healthy aggression and improve social skills is to reprogram your subconscious mind with subliminal messages. You will notice positive changes in your behavioural habits after 5-8 sessions of subliminal training. No effort on your part is required- just download any of subliminal messaging programs, like Subliminal Flash, select affirmations from categories related to confidence and charisma and start the session. You can download free version of Subliminal Flash from many sites, just search Google.

8. Talk: try striking a conversation to 3 people whom you don’t know daily. Just go them and ask them any doubt you have. And when you talk to them, have a smiling face. Don’t think what the other will think about you, just go ahead and find a reason to talk to him/her. The moment you allow these thoughts to come, you will never be able to talk to anyone new. Don’t underestimate yourself or the person you intend to talk to. Have a personality which makes people want to talk to you.

9. Share some part of your life: This doesn’t have to be something big or great. Just narrate some anecdote or experience you have had in your life. Make them feel when you tell them. If possible narrate something funny which will elevate their moods. This will people to behave naturally when around you. They will be able to express themselves freely when around with you.

10. Be a relationship man: Don’t treat people as items. They are people, with souls, hobbies, intersts etc. Learn about them and praise them for their talents. People love to be praised because it increases their self esteem. So if you want to get noticed- show interest in other people, rather than making people think of you as interesting. Also try to make friends and forge relationship with new people always.

11. Mix up with people: never lose contact with your old friends. Never let them have the opinion that you don’t need them because you have found some replacement. Don’t stick to one group. Be a member of every group, so that others think you are a person who can get along with anyone. Don’t remove anyone, otherwise you would create enemies, which will certainly not help your popularity.

12. Do things you have never tried: try out things you have never done earlier. If you want people to notice you do something that you have never tried out ever earlier. It could be doing crazy things like dancing like mad at a formal venue .but don’t give others the opinion that you are doing this to garner attention. Be natural. You will be amazed to know how good you feel and you will gain a lot of affection and respect from people around you. They will recognise you as a person who thinks independently and will follow what his mind says. However, be sure you do not become a joker or an entertainer to them. Have some dignity to yourself.

13. Don’t think too much: being popular is a state of mind. It is also called “charisma”.If you try too hard to become popular, people will dismiss you.

To develop irresistable charisma try subliminal messages (Do you remember Rule #7? If not, scroll up and read it again). Try subliminals, and I guarantee that you will boost your popularity in a week or so: It is a fact proven by numerous experiments with my students. You can download programs like Subliminal Flash for free, such programs have tons of predefined affirmations.

Popularity is how people see you. So the best way for people to see you as a genuine person is to be true always. Use these tips in an intelligent way and you will see the surge in your popularity soon.

Heal Illness With Meditation Exercises

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

There are hundreds of different meditation exercises that you can use to heal your body. Even though many of these meditation exercises are for more advanced students of enlightenment, there are still quite a few meditation exercises that will help the beginner. You don’t have to understand Zen or Buddhist meditation to experience the healing powers of meditation exercises that are geared towards healing a specific illness. You just have to believe that a positive frame of mind will make a difference in your mental and physical health.

The easiest meditation exercises for healing have to do with imagery. You simply have to relax, breathe, and imagine yourself getting better. This is an uncomplicated way to learn the power of healing that mediation exercises possess. After you master this imagery exercise, you can move on to more advance meditation exercises for healing.

How to Heal Illness with Meditation Exercises

For this and any other meditation exercises, take a few moments beforehand to relax. When your body is relaxed, you can give your mind the freedom to contemplate on the wellness that you are seeking. The best way to relax in this case is to do a few stretches to loosen your muscles and to get rid of any tension.

Once you are finished stretching, sit upright in a comfortable chair. Take off your shoes, socks, belts, jewelry, and anything else that is uncomfortable. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.

Clear your mind and then imagine yourself walking down an open staircase. As you go down each step, you will notice that you feel more and more relaxed. At the bottom of the staircase, imagine an inviting scene like a sunny beach, a forest meadow, or a snowy mountain. Make sure that this is a place where you feel safe and where nothing can hurt you.

Once you feel safe in this environment, it is time to use imagery to deal with your ailment. Think about your illness and let any images that want to appear in this safe place come to mind. If too many appear, just focus on one. If any images aren’t friendly, they need to leave the safe place that you have created.

The goal of meditation exercises like this is to think about your illness and find positive images you can use to heal yourself. When you find one, focus on it and let it become as vivid as possible.

Each time you do meditation exercises like this, you should imagine that your ailment is completely cured. That will give your subconscious a blueprint that your body can use to heal you. At the end of the session, it is time to imagine climbing back up the staircase and slowly returning to reality. Open your eyes, stretch one more time, and go back to your day.

This is a simplified version of meditation exercises that will help heal you if you have a stress-related illness. The concept of these kinds of meditation exercises it to communicate with your subconscious. This will let it know that it needs to work on the very essence of what is causing you to be unhealthy.
